Appalachian Audubon Society began awarding the Grace Randolph Scholarship in 2002 to honor a hard-working, energetic, expert-birder who was a well-respected member of our club and a friend to many. It began as a scholarship to pay half of any Appalachian Audubon member's tuition to any environmental camp at Hog Island, Maine. In 2008, we changed direction for this scholarship fund. In order to pass on Grace’s passion for birds and nature on an annual basis, we now award five separate $100 Grace Randolph Scholarships to attendees of the local Wildwood Nature Day Camps, which take place each summer at the Olewine Nature Center and Wildwood Lake. The scholarship recipients will be students ages 7-14 with financial need, who would not otherwise be able to attend the summer camps. It is our desire to bring hope, curiosity, and inspiration to children of the inner city, who do not often get a chance to explore the world of nature. Grace was a nature day camp leader for inner-city children near Washington D.C. in years past, and Wildwood Lake was one of her favorite birding spots. The camps are hosted by Dauphin County Parks and Rec. and we thank them for working with us to provide this opportunity to local students. The day camps have received rave reviews from children and parents that are associated with our chapter. If you would like more information about the summer day camps for ages 7-14, you may call 717-221-0292. |
